John Machin

John Machin (?, 1686?— Londen, 9 juni 1751) was een Brits astronoom die vooral bekend is geworden door het ontwikkelen van een snel convergerende reeks waarmee het getal pi door hem op 100 decimalen kon worden bepaald.

Machins formule:

\pi =16\arctan {\frac {1}{5}}-4\arctan {\frac {1}{239}}
