Carrière
Joey Dee geboren als Joseph DiNicola, (Passaic, 11 juni 1940) richtte de band op in 1958. Vanaf 1960 trad de formatie regelmatig op in het New Yorkse danslokaal Peppermint Lounge, dat zich tot een toevluchtsoord voor twistfans ontwikkelde. Joey maakte daar gebruik van en schreef samen met Henry Glover het nummer Peppermint Twist, een nummer 1-hit en miljoenen-bestseller. Het daarbij behorende live-album Doin' the Twist at the Peppermint Lounge bezette 6 weken lang de 2e plaats van de albumcharts.
Door dit succes trad de band ook op in diverse muziekfilms zoals Hey Let's Twist en Vive le Twist. Bovendien ontdekte Dee vroegtijdig ambitieuze muzikanten. In 1963 nam hij de pianist Little Willie Littlefield, de gitarist Gene Cornish en de organist Felix Cavaliere in dienst bij de groep. De beide laatsten richtten later The Young Rascals op. In het voorjaar van 1966, voordat Chas Chandler hen ontdekte en contracteerde, speelde ook Jimi Hendrix korttijdig bij de Starliters.
