Carrière
Zijn grootste hits waren The Chokin' Kind (1969), Power of Love (1972) en Get Down, Get Down (Get on the Floor) (1975), allen een nummer 1-hit in de r&b-charts, met bovendien grote successen in de Amerikaanse pop-charts. Verdere hits waren onder andere Drowning in the Sea of Love (1971) en het titelthema Theme from Cleopatra Jones (1973) uit de Blaxploitation-klassieker Cleopatra Jones, dat hij inspeelde met The Mainstreeters. Voor The Chokin' Kind kreeg hij in 1970 een Grammy Award als beste r&b-zanger. Een van zijn succesvolste albums Drowning in the Sea of Love ontstond onder regie van de phillysound-producenten Kenny Gamble en Leon Huff.
Zijn laatste kleinere hits in de vroege jaren 80 werden geproduceerd door de countryzanger Porter Wagoner. Verdere opnamen voor kleinere labels waren niet meer succesvol. Een comeback-poging in 1985 met de lp Mr. Right mislukte. Eind jaren 80 trok Simon zich terug uit de wereldse muziekbusiness en wijdde hij zich aan zijn christelijke geloof en de gospelmuziek. Tegenwoordig is hij predikant bij een protestantse kerk in Illinois. Simon was een van de belangrijkste vertegenwoordigers van de Southern Soul.
