Een bekend nummer op het album is het openingsnummer Learning to Fly, dat in 1991 enkele weken bovenaan stond in de lijst van Billboard Mainstream Rock Songs[2]. Andere bekende nummers zijn de titelsong Into the Great Wide Open en Out in the Cold.

Achtergronden

Na het succes van zijn vorige album uit 1989, Full Moon Fever, besloot Petty om opnieuw samen te werken met Jeff Lynne. Tegelijk trad hij voor dit album voor het eerst in een aantal jaar weer opnieuw op met The Heartbreakers.

Into the Great Wide Open werd over het algemeen goed ontvangen, al waren critici van mening dat het album qua stijl wel heel erg op Full Moon Fever leek.[3]
