Shorter studeerde aan de Capilano College en het Centre for Digital Imaging and Sound in Vancouver. Hij begon als assitent bij componist Terry Frewer. Hij is een lid van de Gilde van Canadese Film Composers en Society of Composers, Authors and Music Publishers van Canada.[1] Shorter werd in 2009 genomineerd voor een 'Breakout Composer of the Year' door het International Film Critics Association. In 2010 won hij een 'BMI Film Music Award' met de filmmuziek van District 9.
