Big Jack Johnson

Johnson begon zijn muzikale carrière op 13-jarige leeftijd als gitarist bij zijn vader, een blues- en countrymuzikant. Op 18-jarige leeftijd wisselde hij naar de elektrische gitaar. Vanaf 1962 trad hij op met Frank Frost en Sam Carr als trio, aanvankelijk als The Nighthawks, later als The Jelly Roll Kings. In 1979 verscheen hun album Rockin' the Juke Joint Down, Johnsons eerste opnamen als zanger. In 1987 werd het trio ontbonden. In 1997 kwamen ze nog een keer samen om het album Off Yonder Wall op te nemen. Beide albums werden genomineerd voor een Handy Award.

In 1987 bracht Johnson zijn eerste soloalbum The Oil Man uit, vooral zijn versie van de Catfish Blues telde als voortreffelijk. Voor zijn album The Memphis Bar-B-Que Sessions uit 2002, opgenomen met bluescollega's als Pinetop Perkins en Kim Wilson, kreeg Johnson de Handy Award in de categorie 'Acoustic Blues Album of the Year'. In de loop van zijn carrière werd Johnson veelvoudig onderscheiden.

Big Jack Johnson overleed in maart 2011 op 70-jarige leeftijd naar een langdurige ziekte.
