Head of the river
Head of the river is een term uit het roeien. Het is een wedstrijd tegen de klok waarbij roeiboten om de beurt ('in kiellinie') hetzelfde stuk rivier afvaren, richting monding. De snelste is de winnaar. Dit type race wordt ook wel achtervolgingsrace genoemd.
Doordat boten elkaar kunnen inhalen, is stuurmanskunst vereist. De gekozen startvolgorde dient dit probleem zo eerlijk mogelijk te verdelen. Door te starten op te verwachten snelheid kan de harmonica van boten uit elkaar trekken (minder inhaalsituaties) of juist in elkaar drukken (meer inhaalsituaties). Ook zijn – toch – kleine startverschillen gewenst om het wedstrijdelement erin te houden. Een startverschil van 15 minuten lijkt eerlijker, maar de ploegen zien elkaar niet en roeien letterlijk tegen de klok. Vaak wordt er een interval van 15 à 30 seconden gehanteerd.
Een beroemde race is de Head of the River Race in Engeland, het is een wedstrijd voor achten op de Theems.
In Nederland wordt dit type race in maart geroeid op de Amstel tussen Ouderkerk aan de Amstel en Amsterdam. Officieel heet het het Lange Afstands Kampioenschap van de Amstel en wordt het georganiseerd door de Amsterdamse Roeibond (ARB)/Willem III. Het is een wedstrijd voor achten en dubbel vieren.
