Zawita

Zawita (Kurdish: Zawîte ,زاويتە,[1][2] Arabic: زاويتة), is a town of about 5,000 people in the Dohuk Governorate. The name of the village is thought to come from Syriac ܙܘܝܬܐ meaning "corner."[3]

The village is inhabited mainly by Kurds and the second biggest group is the Assyrians. At one point it was home to mostly Assyrians, prior to the Simele massacre.[4]

A number of Assyrian Christian-owned businesses in the village were looted and burned downed during the 2011 Dohuk riots.[5]
