History

Yalkhoroy is the ancestral home of the Yalkhoroy teip.

From 1940 to 1944, Yalkhoroy was the administrative center of Galanchozhsky District.

On 27 February 1944, after the genocide and deportation of the Chechen and Ingush people and the Chechen-Ingush ASSR was abolished, the village of Yalkhoroy was completely abandoned and was not resettled. From 1944 to 1957, it was a part of the Novoselsky District of Grozny Oblast, due to Galanchozhsky District becoming disbanded and its territory split between other districts.

In 1957, after the Vaynakh people returned and the Chechen-Ingush ASSR was restored, the former residents of Yalkhara and the wider Galanchozhsky District were forbidden from resettling in their former homes, and had to resettle in the plains, mostly in the Groznensky, Sunzhensky, and Achkhoy-Martanovsky districts. As a result, Yalkhoroy has been uninhabited since 1944.

In 2019, Yalkhoroy was named as one of the first 7 settlements in Galanchozhsky District to be rebuilt in order to resettle the area.[4][5]

Notable people

Dzhokhar Dudayev, the first President of the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria, was born in the village, just days before it was abandoned. He was also a member of the Tsecho teip, sometimes confused with Yalkhoroy due to his birthplace.[6]
