William McCourty

William McCourty (1884 – 10 December 1917) was an English professional footballer born in Morpeth, Northumberland, who played in the Football League for Birmingham.[2] McCourty, a former coal miner who played at left half, joined Birmingham in May 1909.[3] He made his debut in the Second Division on 13 September 1909, deputising for the injured Tommy Daykin in a home game against Glossop which finished as a 2–2 draw, and was never picked again, returning to non-league football the following year.[3][4]

Personal life

McCourty served as a gunner in the Royal Garrison Artillery during the First World War and was killed in West Flanders on 10 December 1917.[5] He was buried in Ypres Reservoir Cemetery.[1]
