Wiebke von Carolsfeld

Wiebke von Carolsfeld (born 1966) is a German Canadian film director, writer and editor.[1] Her debut feature film as a director, Marion Bridge, won the Toronto International Film Festival Award for Best Canadian First Feature Film at the 2002 Toronto International Film Festival.[2]

Background

Originally from Germany, von Carolsfeld moved to Canada. Despite having degrees in medieval history and literature from the University of Cologne,[3] she was rejected when she applied to Ryerson University's film school for lacking the Ontario-specific thirteenth grade in her high school transcripts.[1] Instead, she volunteered with the local cable community channel to gain experience, before taking a job as an assistant editor on David Cronenberg's M. Butterfly.[1]

Career

Marion Bridge (starring Molly Parker and introducing Ellen Page), premiered at TIFF, before playing at festivals around the world (competition in Rotterdam, Karlovy Vary, Sydney, Pusan etc.), winning many awards including Best First Feature at TIFF and Sudbury, inclusion in Canada's Top 10, and a nomination for Best Direction from the DGC.

As a writer/director, Wiebke followed up with the documentary Walk with Us and the 2013 film Stay[4], starring Taylor Schilling, Aidan Quinn and Barry Keoghan. After premiering at TIFF, the film won Best Director at the Emerge Film Festival. In the 2015, Wiebke wrote and directedThe Saver.[5] The film won Best Film at the Green Bay Film Festival, Best Actress, Imajyn Cardinal, and Best Supporting Actor, Brandon Oakes, from the American Indian Film Festival, Best Screenplay from the Chlotrudis Awards, as well as a Nomination for Best Director from the Director's Guild of Canada and Best Screenplay from the Writer's Guild of Canada. At the 4th Canadian Screen Awards in 2016, Wiebke was nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay for The Saver.

Her credits as an editor include Eisenstein, Shoemaker, The Five Senses, The Bay of Love and Sorrows, Wrecked, Fugitive Pieces, The Saver, Angelique's Isle and An Audience of Chairs.. As an editor, she was a shortlisted Genie Award nominee for Best Editing at the 22nd Genie Awards in 2002 for Eisenstein.[6] She has been nominated for Outstanding Achievement in Picture Editing by the Director's Guild of Canada for her work on October Gale, Fugitive Pieces and Hayday.

In 2019, Wiebke von Carolsfeld published Claremont, her first novel, to critical acclaim.

She is based in Montreal, Quebec.
