Weightlifting may refer to:

People lift weights for a variety of different reasons. One of the main reasons is to improve their overall health. According to an article in the NY times, lifting weights can prevent some disabilities, increase metabolism, and lower body fat.[1] When compared to machines, free weights improve not only strength but muscle function as well.[2] Lifting weights also improves self-confidence and makes people feel better about themselves.[3]
