Wan Mokhtar was an ally of the similarly long-serving Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad. In 1987 he was elected a national vice-president of UMNO, alongside Anwar Ibrahim, on Mahathir's ticket.[1]
His tenure as Chief Minister and a state assemblyman came to an end at the 1999 election, when the Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party took control of both the state assembly and Wan Mokhtar's seat in a landslide victory.[2]
Wan Mokhtar's son, Wan Abdul Hakim, was elected to the Terengganu state assembly in 2008.[3]
