Volcano Palinuro

Palinuro is an Italian submarine volcano located about 65 kilometers from off the coast of Cilento in Southern Italy. It has a bathymetric share of 70 meters.

Characteristics

Palinuro is a volcanic complex that stretches for about 75 kilometers, is made up of eight major volcanic edifices which branch out in west–east direction. The top of the submarine volcano Palinuro reaches 100 meters below sea level. It is an active volcano that could be very damaging to the southern Tyrrhenian coast in case of eruption.[1] For this reason and considerating the high concentration of volcanoes in this part of the Tyrrhenian Sea, some earthquakes happened in May 2012 created alarm in the media. On 31 May 2012, the inhabitants of Cilento were shown the effects of Palinuro's eruption with an earthquake that shook with a Richter magnitude of about three. The residents were fearful, though there was not much damage to people and buildings.[2]

The nearest towns are Cosenza, Salerno and Lamezia Terme.

Curiosity

On October 24, 2013 there was a tutorial about international tsunami risk caused by a possible eruption.[3] This project was organized by the Department of Civil Protection in accordance with the Campania Region, and in collaboration with the Prefecture, Province and Municipality of Salerno, in the project Twist (Tidal Wave in Southern Tyrrhenian Sea). The exercise has involved the people of Salerno and other neighboring municipalities, with the aim to raise awareness and make them aware of the possible danger of explosion. During the days there was some esercitative operations both at sea and on land, with the simulation of recovery activity of missing people and displacement of the populations. At the event participated also Civil Protection structures of other countries around the Mediterranean Sea, such as Croatia, Spain, France, Greece, Malta, Portogallo. On Friday 25th and Saturday October 26 there was a control to test the capacity of intervention of the European teams, specialized in activity of searching and rescuing diver and cave-mountain-river, working alongside of the teams of Italian Fire Brigade, Navy and Coast Guard, with the support of the Police Forces.[4]
