It was established in October 1999 by its CEO and risk manager, Ole Andreas Halvorsen.[2] In July 2014, they had $28.8 billion under management.[3]

On June 12, 2017, Viking Global Investors announced that it was returning $8 billion to investors to "reset to a smaller size."[4]
