Military career

When the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971 ended with cease-fire on 17 December 1971, Pakistani troops still occupied approximately 600 yards inside Indian territory in the Western Sector and developed this area into a defended locality with minefields. The 4 Para battalion of the Parachute Regiment was tasked with clearing this encroachment. This operation was led by Major Vijay Kumar Berry who led his men through the minefield, charged the enemy position without any regard for his personal safety and captured the objective. After losing the position, the Pakistani troops subjected the position to heavy artillery and mortar fire for over twelve hours. Undeterred, Major Berry moved from section to section, motivating and inspiring his men and held on to the captured position and cleared the intrusion. In this operation, Major Berry displayed conspicuous gallantry and outstanding leadership and was awarded the Maha Vir Chakra, India's second highest award for gallantry in the face of the enemy.
