Veronica Strong-Boag

Veronica Strong-Boag, CM, Ph.D, FRSC (born 1947 in Prestwick, Scotland) is a Canadian historian specializing in the modern history of women and children in Canada. She is formerly Professor of Women's History at the University of British Columbia and now, following her retirement, a Professor Emerita. Having obtained her BA in history from the University of Toronto in 1970, she went on to receive an MA from Carleton University in 1971, and a PhD from the University of Toronto in 1975. Her PhD thesis, completed under the supervision of Michael Bliss, was subsequently published as The Parliament of Women. In 1988 she won the John A. Macdonald Prize (awarded to the best book in Canadian history) for her study of the lives of women in Canada between the wars, entitled The New Day Recalled. In 1993–94 she served as president of the Canadian Historical Association. She was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada in 2001 and in July 2012 the RSC awarded her the J.B. Tyrrell Historical Medal "for outstanding work in the history of Canada". In June 2018, Rideau Hall announced Strong-Boag's upcoming appointment as a member of the Order of Canada. She received an honorary doctorate from the University of Guelph in October 2018 and was formally awarded membership in the Order of Canada in September 2019.
