United States v. Shelley M. Richmond Joseph and Wesley MacGregor (2019) charges the defendants, two officers of the Judiciary of Massachusetts, with conspiracy to obstruct justice and obstruction of a federal proceeding for providing sanctuary to an illegal alien to the United States, by which means he was able to evade arrest by an U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer, the first such case of its kind in the United States since the repeal of the Fugitive Slave Act in 1864.[1][2]

Pay while suspended

On August 13, 2019, the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court ruled Joseph will now be paid her salary of $181,000 and benefits reinstated during her suspension and the court also ruled she will receive backpay going back to April 25, 2019; a total of $51,000.[3]

Judge Joseph was suspended without pay after her indictment and the State of Massachusetts paid legals fees, amounting to $127,000 prior to the indictment being handed down. Joseph was suspended without her $184,600 annual salary and a GoFundMe campaign was created to help the judge pay legal fees. Wesley MacGregor has also received $2,500 for legal fees from the state.[4]
