Ulrich S. Schubert

Ulrich Sigmar Schubert (born 17 July 1969, Tübingen) is a professor of Chemistry at University of Jena. He studied chemistry at the Universities of Frankfurt and Bayreuth (both Germany) and the Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond, Virginia, United States. His Ph.D. work was performed under the supervision of Professor Eisenbach (Bayreuth, Germany) and George R. Newkome, Florida, United States. In 1995, he obtained his doctorate with Eisenbach. After a postdoctoral training with Jean-Marie Lehn (Nobel Laureate in 1987) at the University of Strasbourg (France), he moved to the Technical University of Munich (Germany) to obtain his habilitation in 1999. From 1999 to spring 2000 he held a temporal position as a professor at the Center for NanoScience at the Technical University of Munich. He became a Full-Professor in summer 2000 at the Eindhoven University of Technology. Since summer 2007, Schubert teaches at the University of Jena and holds the chair for Organic and Macromolecular Chemistry. From 2010, he is the scientific chairman in the fields of HTE at the Dutch Polymer Institute. In addition, he acts as the Director of the "Institute of Organic and Macromolecular Chemistry" and directs the research cluster "Innovative Materials and Technologies" at the University of Jena. He currently is the director of the Jena Center for Soft Mater (JCSM) and the Center for Energy and Environmental Chemistry Jena (CEEC Jena).

His Awards include the Bayerischen Habilitations-Förderpreis, the Habilitandenpreis of the GDCh (Fachgruppe Makromolekulare Chemie), the Heisenberg-Stipendium of the DFG, the Dozenten-Stipendium of the Fonds der Chemische Industrie, the VICI award of NWO and the BPG award. Among 640.000 chemists worldwide, Schubert is ranked at place 195. He published over 930 scientific publications, four books and 38 patents. Currently he is listed with a h-index of 91 with 36400 citations (Google scholar: 44400 citations and 103 h-index). The companies JenaBatteries GmbH (2012), SmartDyeLivery GmbH (2014) und Polymer Libraries GmbH (2014) were founded out of his professorship.

On 23.10.2017 the Free State of Thuringia started a new image campaign (das-ist-thueringen.de), with Schubert as advertising ambassador for Thuringia.[1]

Schubert also gained musical education as clarinetist in Frankfurt (Germany), Richmond and Tampa (both United States). Chamber orchestra courses led him to the Abegg Trio, Hagen Quartet, Amadeus Quartet, Prof. Jan Doormann and Prof. Francois Benda. He played in various cities in Europe and the United States.

In 1993, he founded the concert series "Forum Junger Musiker" in Bayreuth. Since then the Forum Junger Musiker presents chamber concerts at the Margravial Opera House in Bayreuth. In 1994, Schubert founded the Internationale Junge Orchesterakademie (IJOA) together with Andreas Göldel, August Everding and Sir Charles Mackerras. In 1995, he brought the Bayreuther Osterfestival into life. He is now president of the Kultur- und Sozialstiftung Internationale Junge Orchesterakademie (IJOA) (Cultural and Social Foundation International Youth Orchestra Academy) and artistic director of the Bayreuther Osterfestival. The festival, bringing musicians from all over the world with a special focus on conflict areas such as Israel-Palestine or North Korea- and South Korea, allows young people to find access to each other on peaceful basis. The gains of the concerts will be donated to the children with cancer, which is the original asset of the foundation. The Academy has so far raised over € 1,200,000 for charity. Hospitals and institutions helping children with cancer in the regions where the concerts take place get donations from the sales of concert tickets and CDs.

Research

The major focus his research interest relates to metallo-supramolecular (block) copolymers and the investigation of the self-assembly process, characterization of supramolecular assemblies in solution, combinatorial material research, heterocyclic chemistry, supramolecular materials, surface biochemistry, nanoscience and tailor-made handcuff-macromolecules, which can be used in bioscience or medical applications.
