Tom Hughes (actor)

Tom Hughes (born 18 April 1985) is an English actor, known for his roles as Prince Albert in the ITV drama Victoria and Joe Lambe in the BBC drama The Game. Hughes has also portrayed Michael Rogers in Agatha Christie's Marple, Jonty Millingden in the ITV drama Trinity, Chaz Jankel in Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll, Bruce Pearson in Cemetery Junction, and Nick Slade in the BBC legal drama Silk. In 2019, it was announced that Hughes would play the role of Christopher Marlowe in the second series of A Discovery of Witches.[2]

Early life

Hughes was born and brought up in Upton by Chester, Cheshire, where he attended the local high school.[3] He attended the Liverpool Everyman Youth Theatre group. He was a member of the Cheshire Youth Theatre and the Jigsaw Music Theatre Company, and graduated from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in 2008 with a Bachelor of Arts in acting.[4] Hughes is the former guitarist of indie band Quaintways.[5] His father, Roy Hughes, is also a musician.

Career

In 2009, he featured in the spin-off BBC series Casualty 1909, and in ITV's Trinity. In 2010, he appeared in Ian Dury biopic Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll as Dury's bandmate Chaz Jankel,[4] and starred as rebellious Bruce Pearson in comedy-drama Cemetery Junction, by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant.[6][7] In the same year he appeared in Sweet Nothings by David Harrower at the Young Vic, directed by Luc Bondy,[8] and was nominated for a BIFA Award for Most Promising Newcomer.[9] In 2011, he was named one of the 42 BAFTA Brits to Watch.[10]

In 2011, he appeared as pupil barrister Nick Slade in BBC legal drama Silk,[11][12] as well as the BBC thriller Page Eight, alongside Ralph Fiennes and Rachel Weisz. In 2013, he starred in the BFI/BBC film, based on the award winning novel, 8 Minutes Idle as the lead role Dan Thomas.

In 2016, he began appearing as Prince Albert in the ITV historic drama series Victoria. Hughes has been in a relationship with his Victoria co-star Jenna Coleman since 2016.[13] In 2019, he starred in the film Red Joan alongside Judi Dench.
