Biography

Tomás Juan Gregorio O'Gorman y Riglos was born in San Fernando, Buenos Aires, the son of Thomas O'Gorman, born in Mauritius Islands, and María de Riglos, a lady belonging to a distinguished Creole family of Buenos Aires.[3] He was married to Carolina Martínez, daughter of Pedro Martínez and María Aguirre.[4]

In addition to taking part in the struggles against the Indians, he had an active participation in the Argentine Civil War.[5] He was commander in Río Cuarto, Córdoba, and served as an Instructor of the National Guards of the departments of San Javier and San Alberto.[6] In 1866 he was recommended by the Minister of War Wenceslao Paunero, to occupy the position of commander in the military detachment of San Luis.[7]

Tomás O'Gorman y Riglos came from old families of politicians and military established in the Río de la Plata. His paternal grandfather was Thomas O'Gorman, an Irish immigrant who served in the Irish Brigades at the service of France. Through his mother he was a descendant of Miguel de Riglos Bástida and Juan de Lezica y Torrezuri, two prominent Spanish politicians.[8]
