Tolu' A Akinyemi is a Nigerian writer and poet best known for his poetry book Dead Lions Don't Roar.[1][2][3]

Career

Akinyemi moved from Nigeria to the UK in 2010 and has since published seven books.[4][5][6][7] Akinyemi released his debut book of poetry, Dead Lions Don't Roar, in 2017, which contained a variety of themes the author had discussed over a decade of his blogging.[8]

Akinyemi released Dead Dogs Don't Bark, his second book containing 160 poems, in 2018.[9] The book was re-released in 2019.[10] His third book of poetry, Dead Cats Don't Meow, was released in April 2019 and featured a multi-national book tour of the UK and Nigeria.[11]

Akinyemi's books have been released both in print and on OkadaBooks, a Nigerian app which lets readers read books on their phone at a lower cost than print. His poems have been analysed as being "poetry of uplift" by the journal English Studies in Africa.[12]

Akinyemi is also a performance poet and has headlined at Great Northern Slam, Crossing The Tyne Festival, Feltonbury Arts and Music Festival, and featured in various Poetry Festivals, Poetry Slam, Spoken Word and Open Mic events in and outside the United Kingdom. He was named as a writer with exceptional talent by the Arts Council England after three of his books became bestsellers in African poetry in the United Kingdom.[13][14]

Philanthropy

Since 2017, Akinyemi has donated a percentage from the proceeds of his books to charity. He supported the Age UK Northumberland's friendship line campaign with £1000.[15][16][17]

Personal life

Akinyemi was born Toluwalope Adeola Akinyemi in Ado-Ekiti. He is a trained Economist with a degree from Ekiti State University and a master's degree in Accounting and Financial Management from University of Hertfordshire, Hatfield, United Kingdom.[18][19]
