The World of Quest
The World of Quest is a comic series by Jason T. Kruse shown on the Komikwerks site as a webcomic and later released as a full graphic novel. The last chapter on the site is called "Prison Break". There are currently two volumes of The World of Quest available from Yen Press. The second volume The World of Quest Volume 2 was nominated for two Harvey Awards in 2009 - Best Graphic Album and Best Artist for artist and author Jason Kruse.
The comic was adapted into an animated series called World of Quest on Kids' WB!; it premiered March 15, 2008 and The CW dropped the show after the first season completed on June 14 of the same year.[1]
The Animated Version
In the land of Odyssia, Prince Nestor goes to seek Quest who was banished years ago by Nestor's mother for failing to properly protect the Prince. Prince Nestor wants Quest's help in rescuing his parents who have been captured and are being held captive by unknown beings. Quest refuses to help Nestor even though he is shown a letter that would have repealed Quest's exile. The Prince places an "allegiance spell" on Quest which forces him to grudgingly obey the Prince. Later they meet up with Graer, a griffin, who joins them in order to rescue, Gatling the cyborg who is in prison. They discover that the prison is actually a giant monster and they aid Gatling in his escape. The group decide to look for the "Dagger of Way", a techno creature. Known as "Way" to the others, the creature eventually aids the group in their search. Finally they are joined by a young wizard female named Anna who understands "Way" unique way of speaking. The group wants to find the five swords which will form the Shadow Soul Sword enabling them to find and free Nestor's parents. They are pursued by Lord Spite and General Ogun who hamper their search.
Differences between comic and animated series
- One major difference is Odyssia in the comic it is set in a world of fantasy, swords and sorcery there wasn't any technology. The characters were also different from their animated counterparts; they were redesigned for the animated series and have different personality.
- Nestor travels with guards when he went to meet with Quest in the comic, Graer didn't appear until the second volume of the graphic novel.
- Gatling isn't a cyborg in the comic, but he did have the ability chew things up and spit them out as bullets. He was the one who tricks Quest into reading the "allegiance spell" in volume two of the graphic novel.
- The Growls were originally call Snarls.
- In the novel Nestor isn't in his teens, he is about 11 years old. In the cartoon he's about 12-15; this was done to attract more viewers.
- Nestor in the novel has no control over Quest; unlike the cartoon Nestor, he is bossed around by Quest.
- Ogun's backstory is explained in the book.
- Lord Spite and General Ogun are significantly more fearsome in the book than in the television series.
