History

The company was founded in 1981 by Mike and Jenny Crossley as Remainders Limited, a discount bookstore. The Works stores are categorised into five product "zones": Kids (toys, games etc.), Arts & Craft, Stationery, Family Gifts and Seasonal / Regional, which includes a selection of local interest and tourist specific ranges.

TheWorks.co.uk, the company's first e-commerce platform, was launched in 2012.

In 2013, the "Together" loyalty card scheme was launched, and had reached one million members by 2016. [5]

Expansion and ownership

In March 2007, The Works acquired 26 outlets of the chains Bargain Books and Bookworld, after their parent company went into administration.[6][7] The Works itself entered administration in January 2008[8] and in May 2008, the business was subsequently purchased by the private equity firm Endless.[9] Hoyle became chairman of the discount retailer after a "sizeable cash investment" in 2015.[10] In July 2018, it was announced that The Works, approximately a third owned by Hoyle, would have an IPO and a valuation of £100 million.[11] Hoyle retained the largest shareholding of 15% after the flotation.
