The Mosquito Philosophy

The Mosquito Philosophy is a 2019 Indian Tamil-language family drama film written and directed by Jayaprakash Radhakrishnan who was awarded the Gollapudi Srinivas Award for the Best Debutant Director for his debut award-winning feature film Lens.[1][2] The Mosquito Philosophy is the story about Suresh, the protagonist, who springs a surprise on his friends by announcing that he is to be wedded, where in fact it is Suresh himself who is in for a surprise. Filmed using the minimalist techniques, it is considered part of the Dogme 95 movement.[3]

Plot

The Mosquito Philosophy is an interrogation of a society that is caught in the throes of tradition and modernity. The protagonist, Suresh, with a seemingly progressive outlook, discovers the hollowness of his beliefs during an evening's merry-making at his friend's home. The film, which unfolds at an almost real-time pace, begins with the middle-aged Suresh announcing his wedding to his (also middle-aged) friends. The announcement comes as a surprise as it does not tally with Suresh's radical beliefs. Under sustained interrogation by the host (JP), his wife (Sindhu), Pradeep and Ravi, Suresh admits to consenting to the marriage only to please his mother, as in the case of most arranged marriages in India. The friendly banter throws serious questions on love, relationships, consent, individual choice and marriage. Although they are all directed at Suresh, they also bring out the irony of each questioner's situation too. As Suresh begins to look inward to confront his hypocrisy, the evening's mood turns grim.

Production

Development

The plot for The Mosquito Philosophy was born over drinks with the director Jayaprakash Radhakrishnan's friend Suresh, who eventually played the protagonist. With just a plot in hand, the shoot was planned for next evening. Director's friends and family agreed to participate. The scenes were shot sequentially, beginning with the drive to the nearest liquor store. There were no retakes or rehearsals. With no script in hand, everyone responded spontaneously to the developing plot from the depth of their own experiences.[4] Originally, actress Shruti Haasan were to produce and present the film under her banner Isidro Media.[5][6]

"In the film a character talks about Mosquito Philosophy, so I decided to name it that way. This film is a minimalistic one, done with an idea of doing a film with bare necessities" - Jayaprakash Radhakrishnan.[3]

Music

Music was produced by Ayyo Rama in Bangalore, India.[3]

Reception

The film premiered at the 2019 Dhaka International Film Festival.
