The Girl from Yesterday (Vietnamese title: Cô gái đến từ hôm qua) is a 2017 Vietnamese romantic comedy film directed by Phan Gia Nhat Linh, based on the novel of the same name by writer Nguyen Nhat Anh. It starring Ngo Kien Huy, Miu Le, Jun Pham, Hoàng Yến Chibi and Lê Hạ Anh.[1][2][3]

Plot

The Girl from Yesterday is a story of the past and the present about a student named Thu. When he was a little boy, he was always proud of himself being a smart boy who could easily bully the girl-next-door Tieu Ly, however once he's grown up, he is being miserable over his pretty classmate Viet An whom he has a crush on.

The film is set in 1997 at a countryside of Southern Vietnam, in highschool, Thu has a huge crush on Viet An as he always tries to flirt her.

Ten years ago, when Thu was younger, he often hung out with a girl-next-door named Tieu Ly. They got along well but Thu often bullies her. Later, Tieu Ly and her family moved to another place. A heartbroken Thu still keeps a secret notebook which is a keepsake for he and Tieu Ly.

Thu borrows a book from Viet An but intentionally wrote a song lyric into the book, Viet An discovers it and tells Thu to get her new one. Next time, Thu borrows another book and stayed up until 3 in the morning to finish the book as Viet An wants him to give it back as soon as possible. Knowing that Viet An likes candy, Thu decides to buy candies for Viet An everyday. However, Viet An has two close friends Chieu Minh and Hong Hoa so Thu has to buy candies for three of them. Not only candy but also chocolate and fruit which causes him run out of money.

Feeling it hard to win Viet An's heart, Thu asks for advice from his best friend Hai, but it fails everytime. The more Thu falls for Viet An, the more he misses the girl-next-door Tieu Ly.

Viet An can't go to school due to be sick, Thu visits her and voluntarily write all the lessons in class for her. As he only focuses on writing lessons for Viet An, he forgets his own lesson so he is scolded by the teacher. At the same time, the teacher also discovers the love poem which Thu writes about Viet An. Viet An also scolds Thu about the poem but she asks him to go to the movies with her. Joyfully thinking that there will be only two of them, but Thu doesn't know that Viet An has also told Hong Hoa to come along.

The film is not only about Thu and Viet An, but also about the love between Chieu Minh and exercise teacher Luc. They love each other but Chieu Minh is diagnosed with heart defect which is unpredictable. Knowing Chieu Minh's condition, Luc brings her to the city for proper treatment.

Back to Thu who has misunderstanding with teacher Luc, he punches him and got suspended. Hai and Viet An come to Thu's house to teach and help Thu study better. Some time later, Thu and Viet An become a couple, also Hai and Hong Hoa. Thu takes Viet An to his house and shows her his secret notebook.

Thu misunderstands that Viet An uses papers from his notebook to make paper boats so he angrily tells Viet An to leave his house, which later he realizes they're just blank papers. Thu chases Viet An to get back the notebook. As they're on the bridge, Viet An reveals that she is Tieu Ly which surprises Thu. During all this time, Viet An hides this away from Thu. Thu is so happy to meet his childhood friend again.
