The Explosion of Sabity Oil tanker occurred on 11 October 2019 and damaged two storerooms aboard the oil tanker Sabity belonging to the National Iranian Tanker Company sailling to Syria[1], into the Red Sea near the Saudi port city of Jiddah.[2] As Iran news agency mentioned, it was stroked by missiles 60 miles (96 kilometers) from the Saudi port city of Jiddah”.[3] There was no acceptance of the incident from Saudi Arabia.[4][5] Following the incident, Benchmark Brent crude oil turned to $60.40 a barrel (2% increasing).[3]

Explosion

The explosion occurred around 5 a.m. on 11 October 2019 and damaged two storerooms aboard the oil tanker Sabiti into the Red Sea near the Saudi port city of Jiddah.[5] According to state television reports, They resulted probably by missile strikes launched by Saudi Arabia[6], although the National Iranian Tanker Company denied the responsibility of Saudi Arabia for the explosion.[7] The foreign ministry stated the tanker had damaged from the explosion.[6]

State-run news agency nominated that explosions had caused substantial harm and an oil spill in the Red Sea[8], as well as two storerooms aboard, were destroyed, later the drip was stopped.[6] As DW News mentioned, experts believed the blast was caused by a terrorist attack.[6] According to Iran's Nour news, the worker of the tanker was safe and the situation was controllable.[7]

Sabity vessel

The Sabity vessel is called to Iran’s National Iranian Tanker Co. That vessel last turned on its tracking devices in August near the Iranian port city of Bandar Abbas. Iranian tankers switch off their trackers as U.S. sanctions to the sale of Iran’s crude oil.[3]

Reaction

U.S. Defense Secretary Mark Esper said, "the U.S. will send fighter jets and additional air defenses to the Saudis to help defend the kingdom against Iran amid the heightened tensions".[5]

Guy Platten, secretary-general of the International Chamber of Shipping stated, as the safety of the crew is vital, we are relieved seafarers are safe and there are no wounded.[6]

Lt. Pete Pagano, a spokesman for the US Navy’s 5th Fleet overseeing the Mideast, said officials there were “aware of reports of this incident,” but refused to say anything.[4]
