Testa Gemella Occidentale

Testa Gemella Occidentale, or Westlicher Zwillingskopf (both meaning "Western Twin Head"), is a 2,837-metre (9,308 ft) mountain peak on the border of Italy and Austria. Since 1997 it has been officially considered the northernmost point of Italy,[1] although the nearby 2,912-metre (9,554 ft) Vetta d'Italia, which is located 400 metres (1,300 ft) to the west and 100 metres (330 ft) to the south, has often been considered the northernmost point.

Location

The mountainous ridge on which the Testa Gemella Occidentale is located, shaped like a horseshoe, embraces the Aurino valley (around the territory of the municipality of Predoi), separating the autonomous province of Bolzano from Salzburg (as well as East Tyrol from the rest of Tyrol). The valley road leads to Austria via the pass of the Forcella del Picco.
