History

  • The Belarusian portal TUT.BY was founded in 2000.

In March 2000 tech journalist Sergey Dmitriev wrote on the forum of the newspaper “Komp'yuternyye vesti” saying that he had an idea to create a Belarusian internet project, and he was ready to gift that idea to anyone who puts it into life. His appeal attracted the attention of Yuri Zisser, the head of the private enterprise "Nadezhnyye programmy". Their meeting on 15 March 2000 can be considered the date of the start of TUT.BY. Nikolay Romanovsky suggested the name to the website. Sergey Dmitriev wanted to make a free e-mail service for Belarusians, similar to Mail.Ru. Andrey Kononovich and Kirill Voloshin (journalists of the newspaper “Komp'yuternyye vesti”), and Danil Rudenko, a programmer with experience in developing electronic mail services and websites, contributed to the launch of the project. After some consideration, the idea transformed into the project of a Belarusian portal under the supervision of Zisser, Voloshin and Rudenko. The founder of TUT.BY Yuri Zisser said their goal was to create a Belarusian Yahoo. In the beginning portal offered free e-mail service, news with an archive, weather forecast, exchange rates, fuel prices, forums and hit counters. Later it began to provide paid website hosting and sell online advertising. Gradually new sections, services and projects appeared on TUT.BY.

  • In August 2016 TUT.BY launched a non-commercial news project about Belarus in English for the foreign audience. The project was named BelarusFeed.
  • The founder of TUT.BY Yuri Zisser received “Advocacy leader 2016” award from the Assembly of business circles for his lasting effort to promote civilized and transparent dialogue between business and government.
  • Around the same time TUT.BY published Sustainability report. The report describes cases with TUT.BY’s initiatives in human rights and environment protection.

In 2017 TUT.BY was recognized a well-known trade mark in Belarus. In 2017 TUT.BY joined the Free Basics project, a joint initiative of mobile service provider life and Facebook to ensure the availability of mobile Internet. TUT.BY supplied news for the project alongside Wikipedia, UN Women and others. TUT.BY and BelarusFeed created a collection of postcards “Welcome To Belarus”. The postcards were handed out to foreigners travelling to Belarus to mark the introduction of the 5 days visa-free entry. In 2017 TUT.BY was among 30 Belarusian companies that signed the “Cooperation agreement of the socially responsible companies in Belarus in the implementation of corporate social responsibility projects”. The agreement was initiated by the local social fund Fond Dobra, part of the UN Global Compact Network Belarus.

  • In March 2018, Belarusian audience of TUT.BY for the first overtook big online platforms like Yandex, Mail.Ru and YouTube.
  • In November 2018 TUT.BY signed the agreement with the Foundation "Directorate of the 2nd European Games 2019" to be info partner as part of Sport Ambassadors project.
  • In January 2019 TUT.BY was registered as an online media by The Ministry of Information.
  • In February 2019, YouTube sent[3] the “Silver Button” (an award handed to the authors of popular channels) to TUT.BY as the portal’s video channel reached 100,000 subscribers.
  • In May 2019, a new absolute record[4] in the history of the portal was set as news of all TUT.BY subdomains got 178 million views (web + apps, according to Yandex.Metrica).
  • In June, free summer school of journalism for teenagers opened[5] in TUT.BY office.

Criticism

In December 2017, Tut.By has been mentioned among several other Belarusian independent media that had allegedly removed or edited old news stories about the 2015 arrest and ten months long imprisonment of the businessman Viktor Prokopenya from their websites. This was allegedly done after the media were approached by Prokopenya's public relations advisors. The situation has caused a wide discussion among Belarusian journalists and media professionals.[8][9][10][11]
