THE9, also known as THE NINE, is a Chinese girl group formed by the 2020 Chinese survival show Youth With You Season 2. The group consists of nine members: XIN Liu (Liu Yuxin), Esther Yu (Yu Shuxin), Kiki Xu (Xu Jiaqi), Yu Yan, Shaking (Xie Keyin), Babymonster An (An Qi), Zhao Xiaotang , Snow Kong (Kong Xueer) and K Lu (Lu Keran).[1]

History

Pre-debut
Main article: Youth With You (season 2)

THE9 was formed through the reality television show Youth with You Season 2, which aired from March 12 to May 30, 2020. It was the third season of the Idol Producer franchise. Out of 109 trainees from different companies, only the Top 9 most voted on trainees in the final episode got to debut in the final group. It was eventually announced that XIN Liu had came in 1st place, Esther Yu in 2nd, followed by Kiki Xu, Yu Yan, Shaking in 5th, Babymonster An, Zhao Xiaotang, Snow Kong and K Lu in 9th place respectively. Since having earned 1st place, XIN Liu was chosen as the center of the group.[2][3]

Prior to THE9, XIN Liu and Snow Kong were members of the now-disbanded girl group Lady Bees.

Kiki Xu is a member of SNH48 and its sub-unit 7Senses.

Yu Yan was previously on the show Girls, Fighting.

Shaking was also previously on the show Girls, Fighting and The Next Top Bang, she is a former member of disbanded girl group LEGAL HIGH.

Babymonster An is a member of Chinese girl group HICKEY.

Zhao Xiaotang was previously on the show The Best of Us.

K Lu is a member of Chinese South-Korean based girl group Fanxy Red.

Esther Yu is an actress known for many successful lead acting roles such as Cai Minmin in Find Yourself prior to Youth with You.
