Sutphin (also spelled Sutphen) is named after the town of Zutphen in the Netherlands. It is a surname which occurs in the United States: Sutphin or Van Sutphen. It is an Americanized form of the Dutch surname Zutphen or van Zutphen, from the place-name Zutphen (used for residents),[1] meaning "south fen".
