Sushin Shyam

Sushin Shyam[1] is an Indian musician and music composer in the Malayalam film industry. He is also the keyboardist of a well known Indian folk metal band, The Down Troddence.[2][3][4]

Life

Sushin attended St.Joseph's Higher Secondary School, Thalassery and Mambaram higher secondary school in Thalassery, a coastal town in North Kerala. His father, being a musician began teaching him to play the keyboard at a very young age. He first performed on stage at age 9. Sushin participated in youth festivals and won a number of state awards during his school years. He went on to pursue engineering in Sri Sidhartha Institute of technology but dropped out to pursue his career in music. The song "Kakkoosil poyittu appi onnum poyilla" guitared by him was a big hit while he was in college. He shifted to Chennai to explore opportunities in the film industry.[5] Sushin found his mentor, Deepak Dev,[6] and worked with him for over two years.

Sushin worked as a keyboard programmer under the composer Rasheed for the latter's album song, "Akalukayano", which became very popular with Malayalee audience and was one of the trending songs at the time. The downtroddence started off as a home studio project by Varun and Munz in 2008, called Ultimatyum. Soon, Sushin joined them on the keyboard. In 2010,The Down Troddence[7] performed live as a six-piece band. Their debut album how are you. We are fine, thank you was released in 2014. TDT has always been noted for its unique blend of conventional thrash and groove metal sound with a touch of traditional Kerala folk music elements and art forms. The band got its first boost with the release of a music video for their single, "Shiva". The album also received seven out of the thirteen awards at the Rolling stones in 2015. Sushin was nominated for Best Keyboardist award (critics' choice and popular choice) at the same event.[8][9]

Career as Music Composer

Sushin started off his film career at an early age of 19 with Deepak Dev as his mentor. He has programmed background score for over forty-five Malayalam, Tamil and Telugu movies in the span of 4 years. He composed Music for the short film ' 'Oru kutti chodyam' directed by Ganesh Raj in 2012. In 2013, Rex Vijayan, the lead guitarist of 'Avial' was working on a film, Neelakasham Pachakadal Chuvanna Bhoomi and he called on Sushin to programme background score for the film .He sang the song,'Thaazhvaram'[10] for the same film. Meeting Rex was a turning point for Sushin as Rex encouraged Sushin to compose background score for his next film, 'Sapthamashree Thaskaraha' directed by Anil Radhakrishnan Menon in 2014. This would be his first independent project as a composer. He sang his second song,'Kayi Ethum Doorathonde' in this film. Thereafter, he composed background score for Lord Livingstone 7000 Kandi, another film by Anil Radhakrishnan Menon in 2015. His next work,'Kismath'[10][11][12][13][14][15][16][17] was for a debut director, Shanavas. The background score and song,'Kisa Pathiyil' was well received by the audience. Manu Joseph’s 'Vicky' was Sushin's next sensational work on the internet. His Next work was 'Ezra', Released on early 2017, a horror mystery film directed by Jay.K. He composed the background score and two songs for the film. 'Thambiraan' and 'Irulu Neelum Raave'[18][19][20][21] were both haunting tunes that stayed true to the film. He also did background scores for films Villain and The Great Father in 2017. His works in 2018 were Maradona ,Lilli and Varathan. His 2019 releases were Kumbalangi Nights and Virus. Sushin's compositions for both films were widely acclaimed and appreciated.[9][22][23][24] He co-composed background score with Jackson Vijayan for Anwar Rasheed's Fahadh Faasil starred movie Trance, which was released on February 2020.[25] Sushin's latest release is Kappela.

He also appeared in short roles in Grandmaster, Thattathin Marayathu,[26] Da Thadiya,[27] Honey Bee, Guppy and Mayaanadhi.
