Subramanian Arun Prasad

Subramanian Arun Prasad (born 21 April 1988) is an Indian chess Grandmaster from Salem,Tamil Nadu. In 2008 he became India's 18th chess grandmaster. He moved to US in 2016 and lives in New Jersey, USA. He is the Coach of World's Youngest International Master Abhimanyu Mishra.

Arun started learning chess at the age of 7. The initial years went with a few wins in the local and state level tournaments. The first big win came in 2003 when he went on to win the National Sub-Junior Chess Championship in Kozhikode, India. After a few months in the beginning of 2004 he won the National U-18 Chess Championship in Hyderadad, India.

Arun Prasad’s first International victory came when he Won the 2004 Asian Under 16 Chess Championship in Tehran, Iran edging out Lê Quang Liêm on tiebreak score and as a result he earned the title of FIDE Master (FM) . The same year he also Won the Asian Junior Championship on tiebreak over J. Deepan Chakkravarthy in Bikaner, India. Thanks to this achievement Arun Prasad was awarded the title of International Master (IM) .

In 2008 he became India's 18th Grandmaster in Philadelphia, USA during the Philadelphia Open Chess Tournament.

In 2009 he became the First Indian to win the Open in the Scottish Chess Championship in Edinburgh, Scotland. He achieved his career peak rating 2570 after this victory.

In 2010 he was part of the Bronze medal-winning Indian team in World Team Chess Championship in Bursa, Turkey. He also Won the Individual bronze medal on board 5 in World Team Chess Championship.

In 2011 he Won the Paris Chess Championship after defeating his countrymate S.P.Sethuraman  in the final round of the tournament .

In 2015 Arun Prasad finished in third place on tiebreak at the Washington Open, a point behind Gata Kamsky .

In 2017 he tied for First Place in the 27th North American Open Tournament in Las Vegas, USA. He shared the first place with GM Robert Hess, Samuel Sevian, Ruifeng Li and Aldama Dionisio.

Since 2016 he has been a professional trainer. His student Abhimanyu Mishra made a world record by becoming the youngest International Master in Nov 2019.
