Background

In 2019, members of the Namibia National Students Organization were involved in ideological differences over ways in which Namibian students needed to be represented. They accused the President of Nanso, its Secretary General and Secretary to the students president as being captured by members of the SWAPO Party Youth League and having sold out the student struggle. This preceded a public altercation aired on the Namibian Broadcasting Corporation news in April 2019. In it, the president of Nanso was chased out of a meeting by student leaders accusing her "selling out the struggle to politicians". Following months of public spats, the Vice President of Nanso Bernard Kavau, Khomas Regional Cordinator Simon Amunime and President of the International University of Management Ngolo Sheya were removed from their positions by a faction that supported the Nanso President. The student leaders then formed the Students Union of Namibia as a means to confront and solve issues involving NSFAF.[4][5][3]
