Spacey Jane

Spacey Jane is an indie-rock, garage Australian band, formed in 2016 in Fremantle, Western Australia.[1]

Band members include Caleb Harper (vocals), Kieran Lama (drums), Ashton Hardman Le Cornu (guitar) and Amelia Murray (bass), who was replaced by Peppa Lane (bass) in 2019.[1] The band's debut studio album Sunlight debuted at number 2 on the ARIA Charts in June 2020.

Spacey Jane formed in 2016, amidst the isolated nature of Perth's music scene[2] by Caleb Harper and Kieran Lama who grew up in Geraldton, Western Australia, and played together in a band during high school, called SICCHINO.[3] Ashton Hardman Le Cornu and Amelia Murrary met through a university French class. Lama then met Hardman through a mutual relationship. The band name, Spacey Jane, came to be during a night out in Perth with one of the band members' mutual friends, Jane, as stated by the band.[1]

In August 2017, the band released their debut single "Still Running", which was followed by the EP No Way to Treat an Animal in November 2017.

The band has performed at several festivals, including Laneway and were the winners of the Triple J Unearthed competition in 2018, resulting in their inclusion in the 2018 Falls Festival line up.[1] Spacey Jane's "Good For You" featured at number 80 in Triple J's Hottest 100 of 2019.[4][5] The band has supported the likes of The Jungle Giants and Alex Lahey.[6]

On 6 January 2020, Artists Without A Label, better known as AWAL, announced a global deal signing with Spacey Jane.[7] The deal with AWAL offers services to the band such as "global marketing, campaign coordination, sync licensing, and global distribution".[7]

Influences

In an interview with Triple J Unearthed in 2019, the band mentioned they were influenced by and shared a music taste with Wilco, early Kings of Leon, Courtney Barnett, The Strokes and Pixies, to name a few.[1]

Later in this interview, Harper discusses his inspiration for songwriting as coming from "processing emotions and life experiences" and "music as a means of catharsis".[1] According to the band as a whole, there is an aim on making music which resonates with people, and a focus on the sense of connection that music and the lyricality of music brings (Spacey Jane, 2019). This connection was stated as being both a connection between the band and fans, as well as amongst fans.[27]

'Isol-aid'

Spacey Jane participated in the first round of ‘Isol-aid’, a stay-at-home festival initiative aiming to assist the Australian Music industry during the COVID-19 pandemic.[28] The band performed a twenty (20) minute live set through a livestream on Instagram on 21 March 2020.[29] The set was performed alongside artists including Angie McMahon, Stella Donnelly, Yours Truly and Moaning Lisa.[29]
