In April 2017 Smith's Wood School became part of the Fairfax Multi Academy Trust, Mr Bird became the Executive Head. Fairfax School and Bournville School are also a member of the Fairfax Multi Academy Trust, along with Erdington Academy.

It is a community school administered by Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council. Smith's Wood School was awarded specialist Sports College status in September 2006 and was renamed Smith's Wood Sports College.
