History and products

Setapp launched in beta in November 2016,[4][5] and was officially released in January 2017.[6] In June 2017, Setapp reported having 10,000 subscribers[7] worldwide, mostly in the United States but with growing audiences in United Kingdom, Germany, and France.[8] And November 2017 there were more than 200,000 trial users testing the service.[9]

By June 2018, the service included over 115 applications,[10] with an average of three new ones joining each month. App categories cover productivity, lifestyle, web development, Mac maintenance, creativity, writing, education, and personal finance.

MacPaw has added their own products, CleanMyMac and Gemini, to Setapp, as well as a number of other applications such as Folx, ForkLift, RapidWeaver, Ulysses and Xmind.[11][12]

Business model

Setapp introduced a subscription model[13] for software usage akin to streaming services like Spotify and Netflix.[14][15][16] Instead of paying a single price for a standalone application, users can use all the apps in the collection for a single monthly fee.[17]

The philosophy behind the initiative was to give users preselected, ready-to-use software that covers both generic and job-specific tasks. Applications on Setapp are automatically updated and contain no in-app purchases[18] or advertisement.

The main part of the revenue generated by Setapp is divided between app developers[19] based on the usage volumes of their products.
