Sarkar (surname)

Sarkar (landlord/zamindar/revenue-collector) is an Indian/Bangladeshi surname, mostly found in Eastern India and present day Bangladesh. It was a more of a title rather than a surname received by families regardless of religion during Mughal Period,which was later adopted as a surname. The title is based on Persian word “sarkar” meaning chief, superintendent, lord.
