Samrajyam

Samrajyam (Malayalam: സാമ്രാജ്യം, English: The Empire) is a 1990 Indian Malayalam-language gangster film directed by Jomon. The film stars Mammootty as Alexander, a powerful underworld don. This movie narrates the story of an Underworld Don's Rise and fall, which had come out in the theatres in 1990 was directed by Jomon. The movie had turned out to be a trendsetter upon its big release.[1]This stylish don movie even inspired suresh krishna to direct baasha.Rajanikanth styled himself as don after taking inspiration from mammootty character alexander.[2]

Premise

Alexander, a powerful mafia leader, faces several trials and tribulations while trying to juggle his estranged relationship with his policeman father and rule the underworld.

Box Office

Samrajyam and its lead character Alexander portrayed to perfection by Mammootty, went on to gain huge popularity upon the release.Movie ran over 200 days at kerala boxoffice. It did set the cash registers ringing and the movie even did wonders in places outside Kerala.[4] Its telugu version released along with chiranjeevi movie in andhra pradesh and even toppled that movie.[5][6]

Sequel

Samrajyam II: Son of Alexander starring Unni Mukundan in lead. The movie will be the debut Malayalam venture of Tamil director Perarasu. Twentyone years from the original, this sequel will be telling an underworld plot with the son of Alexander.[3]
