Samarendra Nath Biswas

Samarendra Nath Biswas (1 May 1926 – 4 January 2005) was an Indian theoretical physicist known for his work in theoretical particle physics involving the particle classification spectrum, experimental consequences of particle interaction based on unitary symmetry and its relativistic generalization, dispersion relations, geometrical phases of wave function in quantum mechanics, development of supersymmetric classical mechanics and role of parastatistics in statistical mechanics.

Life, education and career

Samarendra Nath Biswas (1 May 1926 – 4 January 2005) was born in the undivided Bengal now part of Bangladesh and had his education there till the graduate level graduating from Pabna Edward college. He obtained his DPhil degree (1951) from the University of Calcutta and PhD degree (under the supervision of Herbert S. Green) (1958) from the University of Adelaide, Australia. He worked in theoretical physics, specializing in elementary particle physics. He was a Fellow at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai (1958–64). Dean and Professor of Physics, Centre for Advanced Study in Physics, Department of Physics and Astrophysics, University of Delhi (1969–91) and Dean, School of Environmental Science, Jawahar Lal Nehru University, Delhi (1974–76).[1] He authored one book on Classical Mechanics and one book on Quantum Mechanics which are like the textbooks. He was a great teacher and was fondly called as "dada" by his colleagues, students, friends and admirers the world over. He produced a large number of PhD's who are now occupying leading academic positions the world over.

Scientific Research

Work of Biswas focused on the particle classification spectrum, experimental consequences of particle interaction based on unitary symmetry and its relativistic generalization, dispersion relations, geometrical phases of wave function in quantum mechanics, development of supersymmetric classical mechanics and role of parastatistics in statistical mechanics. ,[2][3][4] He authored books on classical and quantum mechanics which became celebrated and acquired the status of the textbooks on these topics.

Biswas has written over 95 scientific articles, which have received several citations. ,[5][6]
