SD Erandio Club

Football was brought to the village by the English, who came as technicians to develop the mining industry of Biscay. According to stories from the older generations, the Erandio team was founded between 1913 and 1914, without being officially incorporated. It remained like this until around 2nd January 1915, however there is no data in the club nor in the Federacion Vizcaina de Futbol of the exact date that they became a federated team. During the years 1913 and 1915, with players from the teams Ya Veremos and Aurrera, is when S.D Erandio Club was founded. Their kit was a blue and white jersey with vertical stripes and black shorts.

The team took part in the championship organised by the Bilbao Children's Federation in 1914 and won the championship title. That success encouraged the fans in the city of Erandio. A board of directors was formed, with don Basileo de Lores named as president. The next year, Erandio Club played in the North Regional League, in the Second Division, and remained there until 1918. It had been federated for three years.

In 1916, Erandio Club played their fixtures in Lamiaco until the pitch was closed. At this point, the Board contacted don Laureano Jado about a patch of land named Machaqueo, next to the road which runs from Bilbao to Las Arenas, near the railroad. The field's attributes allowed a football pitch of 104 meters long by 65.5 wide, with a capacity of 9000 spectators, more than enough for the club's needs.

It was a collaborative effort of many: managers, partners, and supporters, involving cleanup work done even at night. In 1917, the field was fenced, and the Society was established in the first floor of Café Roque. That field did required improvements. It was without walls and the terrain was in poor conditions. It was the Athletic de Bilbao and Deusto who gave Erandio their fields so it could continue playing in the Serie A. It was 1918. Mr. Jado -again- agreed to wall up the field. Ategorri (Red Door) field was born .

1922 to 1927 were difficult times for the Erandio Club. An economic crisis, leaves on the team... It descended to category B. But the 1929-1930 season the team made a comeback and won the championship. In 1932, the team proclaimed runner-up in amateur Spain, losing 0-3 against the Imperio de Madrid in the Chamartín field. The Erandio Club took a new beat in 1931, and was proclaimed champion of the Biscay amateur championship and was amateur champion of Spain in 1933. They beat Sevilla in Barcelona, in Montjuic Stadium on 25 June. Erandio was proclaimed champion of Biscay in the years 1933, 34 and 35.

After the civil war, the Erandio Club played in one of the numerous groups in which the Spanish Second Division was divided during the 1939-1940 season. Erandio was sixth in its group, but the restructuring of the category left the Erandio out at the end of the season. The reconstruction of the club after the civil war attracted to Erandio many young players arising from anonymity, though some of them would reach fame in a very short time. In that very young team of the post-war excelled a young eighteen year-old striker native from Asúa neighborhood of Erandio, with his sensational performances in the striker position he soon got the attention of the Athletic Club, also immersed in the recomposition of its decimated team and, after some quick negotiations, Athletic Club of Bilbao quickly hired him. His name was Pedro Telmo Zarraonandia -Zarra- and would become over the years the top scorer of the history of the Spanish soccer league.

The Erandio returned as champion of the Biscay Cup in the 1941-1942 season. In the next season it made the doblete and got to be champion of the amateur Biscay Cup and champion of the Biscay Cup. Again in the 1943-1944 season is champion of the amateur Biscay Cup. In 1944, Erandio was proclaimed champion of the Spanish Third Division. Finally, after several seasons brushing past the ascension, Erandio reached the greatest success of its history in 1949 by achieving the promotion to the Spanish Second Division. The erandiotarras remained one single season in the second division (1949-1950) where they played with many historical teams (Osasuna, Racing de Santander, Sporting de Gijón or Real Zaragoza). The descent was consummated that same season by occupying the 14th place. By the end of the season, the team is evicted from their field.

Erandio had to play in borrowed fields such as Leorbaso, Ibaiondo, Echévarri, Lasesarre, San Ignacio, Garellano... It should also be noted among other selfless managers, the great work of don Damián Zabaleta, a late honorary president, whose active and positive collaboration in the club proved of great value. During that pilgrimage, the base team of Erandio, Txorierri Frimotor, was champion of Biscay in the 1956-1957 season, and in that same season achieved the runner-up of Spain, losing against Murcia. In 1965, the Bodas de Oro del Erandio (golden weddings of Erandio) were celebrated. There were innumerable celebrations, shining in the match played at San Mamés against Athletic Bilbao. The enthusiast don José María Fruniz was the president of Erandio.

The Erandio Club was left without a field in 1950. It began with the famous raffle that, year after year, was set up in the town square, during the San Agustín celebrations. With the money obtained and through a general meeting to the effect, by a stock of 10,000 pesetas lands were acquired that, later, would be sold to buy other lands that due to their unevenness needed filling.

After many difficulties, Ategorri opened its doors on 13 October 1967. Through the financial contribution of a group of managers of the club, it acquired the field where the current Ategorri is, filling the depression running through the field with slate paid for by the truckload.

Due to the cost of the field, a popular bilbainada (a genre of music from Vizcaya) was created:

The new Ategorri was opened with a friendly match against Athletic Bilbao. In 1968, under the presidency of don María José Mesa, a landslide forced the reconstruction of the field, its dimensions then expanded 20 meters, and the club had to return to the San Ignacio field. In 1970, under the presidency of don Imanol Azcarate, a brewery (with bar service) was built inside the facilities. In 1972, with don José María García Iturbe as president, the metal grandstand was built, in whose work collaborated actively don José María Mesa and don Luis María Suazo. In 1976, they get a location for the social headquarters of the Club, close to the level step.

Erandio served the Regional Preferente from 1969 until 1972. This last season the team returns to the Third Division. In the following season, until the 1977 season, they play in the Preferente Regional and the Erandio wins the championship five times in a row.

In the 1980-1981 season, the Eerandio reached the highest point of its sport history achieving the ascension to Segunda B, after being proclaiming Third Division champions and surpassing the jienense team of Martos and the Leonés de la Ponferradina. The seventh place achieved during the 1981-1982 debut marked their best classification in the new category. The team's budget was insufficient to maintain its performance, resulting in the relegation to Third Division in 1984-1985.

Since 1985, the club has stayed low, remaining in the Third Division (1985-1988/1992-1994), the División de Honor (1988-1992/1994-), and the Preferente Territorial from 2007 to 2011.

In 1990, with Luis María Suazo as president, the club celebrated their seventy-fifth anniversary of becoming a federation soccer team.

In October 2010, an assembly approved the municipalization of all of the Club's properties, notably the historic Ategorri Soccer Field.[1] The reason of the municipalization is because the already scarce low attendance of spectators and because of the impossibility to afford the required reparations for the maintenance of the long-lived field.

On 14 May 2011, the Erandio achieved to return to the División de Honor after four seasons by winning 4-1 to Padura.

After three seasons in the División de Honor, Erandio during the 2013-2014 season finished in second position and promoting against Tolosa and San Inazio (Álava) winning said promotion and occupying the vacancy of the Laudio, which descended due to being unable to pay dues to the federation.[2]

Erandio, after twentry years, in the 2014-2015 season competed in its centenary in the Group IV of the Tercera División.[3][4][5] In that same season after a bad run of results, Erandio Club descended to the División de Honor. At the end of the season, a game of veterans was played commemorative of the club centenary against a veteran team of the Athletic Club. Among which was players like Imanol, Armando, Lakabeg, Casas, Ocio, J. Etxeberria, J. González y Gabilondo.[6][7] On 27 August 2015, the club published a book with the history of 100 years of the club.[8][9] On 7 December 2015, the tv show "El día después" of Canal+ rebroadcast a report of the centenary of the club.[10][11]

In 2017, the club received recognition from the Basque Government for its value to the Basque community.[12]

In the shield of Erandio Club the top-left margin contains one sphere and in the top-right vertical blue bars and the cross of St. Andrew. The rest of the shield is covered by blue vertical bars tilted to the right, and the center contains the initials E and C from Erandio Club.[13]

The Erandio Club mascot is Kai,[14] which comes from Basque kaio which means "seagull". Their appearance is of a seagull wearing a beret and wears the main shirt of Erandio Club.

The first kit consists of a blue-striped shirt, blue shorts and blue socks with white trim.

As for the away kit has traditionally consisted of a red shirt with blue and white trim with blue shorts and blue socks stockings with white trim. Currently, they wear a red shirt with white piping on the shoulders and neck with red pants and stockings of the same color

¡Aupa Erandio!, Composed in 1965 on the occasion of the Golden Jubilee of the Society Foundations, Pablo Martinez Ibarruri composed the lyrics of the anthem dedicated to the Club.[15] the musical composition was the work of master Rodrigo A. Santiago. The chorus Otxote Txipli Txapla recorded for the first time the anthem on CD.

The Erandio "B" is the subsidiary of Erandio Club team. Currently on Vizcaya First Territorial Division, group 1 and play their games in Ategorri.

The club has two youth teams federated, each in a different category. The First Youth (Txorierri) currently plays in the Youth First Division of Group 1 and the second juvenile (Ategorri) plays in Youth Second Division Group 4.

The club also has available cadet teams and children to promote new players. The junior team currently plays in the second division of cadets of Group 4 and infant child in the second division.

Erandio has a women's team from from 2002-2007 until the first team won promotion to Regional 1st Biscayne in 2006/07. In 2007 after splitting with Erandio Sport Society Club and born Betiko Neskak Futbol Kirol Elkartea [20]
