Roy Wang

Roy Wang, also known as Wang Yuan (Chinese: 王源; pinyin: Wáng Yuán) is a Chinese singer-songwriter, television host and actor. He was named by Time as one of the 30 Most Influential Teens of 2017.[1] Wang has been an UNICEF Ambassador since 2018.[2] He has set up his own charity foundation Yuan Foundation which focuses on helping the elderly and children.

Career

Wang officially debuted as a member of TFBOYS (加油男孩), a three-person Chinese pop group along with Karry Wang (王俊凯) and Jackson Yi (易烊千玺), on 6 August 2013.[3]

2016

At Wang's 15th birthday concert, Wang performed his first solo single "Cause of You", which was both written and composed by himself for his fans. The song was officially released in January 2016. Wang's post of this song on Weibo has been re-posted for more than 471 million times.[4] This song was also awarded Top 10 golden songs of Fresh Asia Charts,[5] and Wang won the "Most Popular New Talent" award at the 9th CSC Music Awards for the song.[6]

Wang became the youngest person to appear on the cover of COSMOPOLITAN China, when he was featured in the June 2016 edition together with his L.O.R.D co-stars.[7]

In July 2016, Wang had a guest role in the xianxia drama, Noble Aspirations where he played the younger counterpart of the protagonist.[8]

He released his second single which is written and composed by himself in October 2016, titled "The Best Time", as a gift to his alma mater for Chongqing Nankai Middle School 's 80th Anniversary.[9] In November, he released his third single "Grown Up", produced by JJ Lin.[10]

The same year, Wang had a supporting role in Guo Jingming's fantasy epic L.O.R.D: Legend of Ravaging Dynasties.[11] He was awarded the Popular Star award at the Weibo Movie Awards Ceremony.[12]

2017

In January 2017, Wang became an emcee for the second season of Zhejiang TV's prime time variety show, "Ace vs Ace" season 2.[13] The show topped the TV ratings in China for the first quarter of the year and was viewed more than 5 billion times online.[14]

On 20 April, Wang shoot the cover for the June issue of Bazaar Men China. 10,000 issues were sold out in 1 second and 38,000 issues in 16 seconds, which broke the magazine sales record.

In July 2017, Wang released his first single of the year, titled "Sunshine Will Never Fade Away". Wang participated in writing the lyrics and designing the album cover. The song serves as the soundtrack of Boy Hood, a youth sports drama which Wang stars in.[15]

In September 2017, Wang joined the cast of Dragon TV's variety show, "Youth Inn".[16]

On 25 September, the October issue of Madame Figaro China featuring Wang as cover star, set a sales record for this magazine by selling out 20,000 issues within 1 second.

In October 2017, Wang joined the indie film, So Long, My Son, directed by the leading Chinese auteur Wang Xiaoshuai.[17]

On 24 October, Wang's self-written and composed single "Seventeen" was released for his 17th birthday.[18] He released his first English single, titled "Sleep" on 6 November.[19] On 20 November, Wang released another single titled "Pride", which is dedicated to his mother.[20]

2018

In 2018, Wang was cast as the male lead in the xianxia drama The Great Ruler. The drama is set to air in 2019.[21]

Wang's first digital album titled "Song For You" was released on 22 January. The proceeds from the sale of the album go to Wang's charity foundation, Yuan Foundation.[22]

In February 2018, Wang returned to host "Ace vs Ace" season 3.[23]

In March, Wang was invited to attend Givenchy 2018 FW fashion show during Paris Fashion Week.

In April, Wang was invited by Chopard to attend Baselworld Watch and Jewellery Fair.[24]

In May, Wang was invited to attend The Cannes film festival as the ambassador of two famous brand L'Oreal Paris and Chopard. He was the youngest Chinese artist to make an appearance at the Cannes.[25]

Wang partnered with Line Friends to create his own line of characters "ROY6".[26] Merchandise based on the characters included apparel, toys, stationary and household items.

In August, it was announced that he will play a leading role in xXx 4 alongside Vin Diesel and Jay Chou.[27]

2019

On 31 January, Wang announced that he will be pursuing his tertiary education at Berklee College of Music.

This year Wang participated two variety shows, "Haha Farmer" and first half season of "I'm CZR" (also known as "I am a Singer-Songwriter"). The latter show required him to perform an unpublished song which he either composed or wrote the lyrics, for which he wrote 5 songs. He subsequently released one of the songs "Blazing" as a single.

On May 20, Wang was caught smoking illegally in a Beijing restaurant. Beijing Health Supervision Authority has issued a statement saying that "smoking is prohibited in public places, indoor workplaces and on public transportation." He issued a public apology and accepted punishment for his actions.[28]

He released his first self titled EP album "Yuan" on 30 July 2019. The album featured 6 songs and 2 instrumentals. Wang wrote the lyrics for 3 songs and music for 2 songs.

He held his first ever concert as a solo artist on 31 August 2019, in Nanjing.

Social activities

On 18 May 2016, Wang was appointed as "Chongqing Civilized Tourism Public Welfare Ambassador".[29]

In December 2016, Wang worked with the UN China Youth group to promote the "Imagine 2030" campaign, which aims at encouraging the young generation in China.[30] He was recognized for his contributions at the closing ceremony by receiving a special award.[31]

Wang was one of the delegates representing China at the 6th United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) youth forum, held in January 2017. He spoke at the event as the representative of the United Nations Imagine 2030 Campaign, calling for equal access to quality education worldwide.[32][33][34]

In April 2017, Wang collaborated with Sun Nan and released the song, "Dear Child". The song serves as the theme song for Sun Nan's charity foundation, "Sunnan Special Fund for Reshaping the Future".[35]

Wang was one of the recipients of the "May 4th Medal", awarded by the Chinese Communist Youth League (CCYL) to outstanding youths who have made remarkable achievements in agriculture, hi-tech research, news coverage, politics and law, army and police.[36][37]

On 28 June 2017, Wang was appointed as UNICEF's Special Advocate for Education.[38] During the announcement ceremony held by UN China, Wang remarked that "Education is a right; we should never allow it to be a privilege. Let's work hard to make education even better in the future."[39] Wang attended the ‘2017 Forum on Rural Headmasters’ hosted by Jack Ma Foundation and made a speech to raise awareness on rural education.[40] He also paid a site visit on 4 September 2017 to the Love School Project jointly organized by UNICEF and local government of Guangxi Province.[41][42]

On 24 October 2017, with other 16 China celebrities, Wang released "Sing for 2030" to show his support for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through SDGs Vocalization powered by UNDP China.[43]

Wang was named as one of the top 10 influential charity stars by Sina in January 2018.[44]

For a consecutive second year, Wang represented China at the United Nations ECOSOC youth forum held in New York UN headquarters, in his role as UNICEF Special Advocate for Education.[45]

On 17 November 2018, UNICEF Representative to China, Rana Flowers, announced at his 18th birthday concert that he is now UNICEF Ambassador, continuing their partnership to help children.

Charity foundation

On 27 October 2017, Wang announced that he has set up his own charity foundation called "Yuan Foundation" and that the first initiative has been carried out to help elderly with cataract regain their sight.[46] The second initiative was to raise funds for children with Neuroblastoma.[47]
