Roman Catholic Diocese of Tonga

The Roman Catholic Diocese of Tonga (Latin: Dioecesis Tongana) in Tonga is immediately subject to the Holy See. It was erected as the Vicariate Apostolic of Central Oceania in 1842, had subsequent name changes in 1937 and 1957 and was elevated to the Diocese of Tonga in June 21, 1966.[1] Its principal church is the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Tonga (Tongan: Malia Tupu Imakulata) in the capital Nuku'alofa. The tiny Catholic community of some 17,000 is threatened with losing its home because of climate change.[2]

Coat of arms

The coat of arms was designed by Marek Sobola, a heraldic artist from Žilina (Slovakia), who also made a diocesan seal and flag.[5] These are based on the Tonga flag and a Fleur-de-lis, symbol of the Immaculate Conception in Christian iconography. The coat of arms was adopted officially on September 21, 2017.[5]
