Rimba, Brunei

Rimba is a settlement on the outskirts of Bandar Seri Begawan, the capital of Brunei. It is officially a village under Gadong 'A', a mukim (subdistrict) of Brunei-Muara District. Rimba comprises the original Rimba settlement area but it also sometimes refer to the greater area which includes the Rimba public housing estates of the Landless Indigenous Citizens' Housing Scheme and the National Housing Scheme.[2]

Name

"Rimba" is a synonym of hutan, the Malay word for forest.

As a village subdivision, Rimba is officially known in Malay as Kampung Rimba (Kampung is sometimes spelt as Kampong), which literally means 'Rimba Village'.

Both Rimba Landless Indigenous Citizens' Housing Scheme and Rimba National Housing Scheme are named after Rimba as they are located near to this settlement.

Administration

Rimba is officially designated as a village, the third- and lowest-level administrative division of Brunei. It is one of the subdivisions under Gadong 'A', a mukim or subdistrict of Brunei-Muara District.[3] Its community is headed by a village head (Malay: ketua kampung) and the incumbent is Puspa Wira bin Md. Noor.[1][4]

Rimba and Rimba Landless Indigenous Citizens' Housing Scheme make up the postcode area with the postcode BE3119.[3][5]

Healthcare

Pengiran Anak Puteri Hajah Muta-Wakkilah Hayatul Bolkiah Health Centre is a community health centre which provides primary health care to the residents of Rimba as well as the rest of the people residing in the mukims of Gadong 'A' and Gadong 'B'.[6] Rimba is also home to the Rimba Dialysis Centre, a dialysis centre for related patients from the whole of Brunei-Muara.[7]

Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Hajah Saleha Mosque is the mosque in Rimba which provides a proper place for the Muslim residents to perform Jumu'ah or the Friday prayers, as well as other congregational prayers and communal Islamic religious activities.

Miscellaneous

Rimba is home to the Horticulture Business Centre which is one of the few flower markets of the capital.[8] It is managed by the Agriculture and Agrifood Department, a government department under the Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism.
