Riky Rick

Rikhado Makhado (born 20 July 1987), professionally known as Riky Rick, is a South African rapper, songwriter and actor. He is known for his style and his love for the local fashion scene.[1] He is the founder and owner of record label "Cotton Club Records".[2]

Makhado rose to fame when he released his single "Nafukwa", in 2014. He is also known for being a member of the trendsetting crew Boyz N Bucks.[3]

In November 2018, Makhado announced his first concert called "Cotton Fest", which he headlined on February 2, 2019.[4]

Early life

Riky Rick was born Rikhado ribeca Makhado in the KwaMashu township located in the north of the city of Durban in the KwaZulu-Natal province of South Africa.

Career

Riky Rick's first side of music began at a recording studio session with Bongani Fassie. It was by Bongani's side that Rick was inspired to make his own music.[5]

That is when he released his first single "Barbershop" featuring Da L.E.S.[6] He then rose to fame by the release of his hit single "Nafukwa" which was a big success.[7] He then released "Amantombazane" which was followed by "Amantombazane (Remix)" featuring fellow South African recording artists OkMalumkoolKat, Maggz, Kwesta, Ginger Bread Man, Kid X, Nadia Nakai and DJ Dimplez.[8]

He then released his major debut single "Boss Zonke" which peaked at number 3 on the SA Hip Hop Top Ten List. That is when he released his fifth hit single "Sondela" which was dedicated to his real love, featuring South African singer from Mpumalanga, Zano.[9]

On 26 June, Rick released the single "Sidlukotini".[10]

Riky released his debut album Family Values in 2014.

Riky Rick released the Scooby Snacks EP that features only one artist, Frank Casino. It includes the tracks "Oh Lord", "Bandz Over Fans" and "Family" (featuring Frank Casino).[11]

He released a new song, "Buy It Out", on 15 September 2017.[12]

In October 2017, he released the EP Stay Shining under his label Cotton Club Records and distributed by Sony Music Entertainment Africa. The EP featured the song "Stay Shining" featuring Cassper Nyovest, Professor, Major League Djz and producer Alie Keys. The follow-up single from the EP, "Murdah", features Davido and Gemini Major.

Television

In 2015 he appeared on e.tv’s reality show Rolling with…Celeb Edition. He has also appeared on Mzansi Magic’s IsiBaya as music producer Mandellic. In early 2019, he appeared on the South African drama series on e.tv, Rhythm City as recording artist Smashis. He had also landed a gig on THE VOICE SA as a judge.

Awards

He received two nominations at the 2014 Channel O awards, four at the 2014 South African Hip Hop Awards and one nomination at the 2014 South African Music Awards.

Personal life

Riky Rick suffered from an alcohol and drug addiction for a long time.[13] He has now been clean for more than a year.

He is in a relationship with Bianca Naidoo. They have a son, Malik Daniel Makhado, born on 19 March 2014, as well as a daughter. Malik appears on the Family Values album cover.[14]
