Richard S. M. Emrich

Richard Stanley Merrill Emrich (3 March 1910 – 31 October 1997) was the seventh bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Michigan.

Biography

He was born in Mardin in the Ottoman Empire to American Christian missionary parents, and educated at Brown University, and the Episcopal Theological School in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He was ordained to the diaconate in 1936 and to the priesthood in 1938, after which he served parishes in Connecticut and Massachusetts.

Bishop

Emrich was elected suffragan bishop of Michigan in 1946; he served as diocesan bishop from 1948 to 1973. He was made Honorary Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1958. He was succeeded by Harry Coleman McGehee Jr., who was elected in May 1971.[1]

The Emrich Retreat Center at Parishfield, located in Brighton, Michigan and owned by the Episcopal Diocese of Michigan was renamed in honor of Emrich.[2]
