Background and release

Vlastaras started production on the song by attempting to create a drop out of a vocal loop. The song was completed in an exceptionally short amount of time compared to Vlastaras' previous works.[1] Prior to release, the song was considerably hyped up by Monstercat's CEO Mike Darlington, calling it the "biggest banger of 2017".[2] The song was featured on Monstercat's thirtieth compilation album titled Monstercat 030 – Finale released on 22 February 2017. It was the second track on the album, which also includes 29 songs by various artists and two album mixes.[3]

Critical reception

"Resistance" was well received by most critics. Erik Mahal of EDM Sauce described the song as if "Major Lazer had a baby with Crookers", writing that Vlastaras continues to demonstrate how his music direction goes against the mainstream.[4] Writing for Earmilk, Rachel Steer wrote her own interpretation of the song's meaning, writing that it is about "resisting the forces holding you back and how you should always believe in what is right."[1] Your EDM's Landon Fleury called the song an instant classic and one of Monstercat's "filthiest releases to date", writing that the song could have easily made its way into a Yellow Claw tracklist with sounds comparable to those released by Barong Family.[2] Kanvar Kohli of Dancing Astronaut called the song Vlastaras' best production in recent times, writing that the song is "extremely powerful and hits the listener in a visceral and somewhat incomprehensible way."[5] By The Wavs' Theo Maulen noted the structure of the song as unique because of its large brass and horn instrumentals being one of the song's primary focuses, calling it one that sets itself apart from others.[6]
