Military career

Assistant Commandant Ram Krishna Wadhwa was commissioned into Regiment of Artillery on 2 February 1964. After his release from the Army, he joined the BSF in 1968.

In 1971, at the time of the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971 his BSF unit was deployed at Raja Mohtam area in Punjab, on the western front. The BSF picket had been occupied by Pakistani troops on 5 December 1971. Asst. Commandant R.K. Wadhwa was tasked with recapturing it. He led his troops gallantly through a heavily mined area under intense and accurate fire and his unit was able to capture the objective. Later when he was counter-attacked, he showed exemplary courage and leadership in going from trench to trench encouraging his men. However, while moving between trenches under heavy fire, he was mortally wounded by enemy shelling and succumbed to his injuries.[2] For his exceptional courage and leadership, Assistant Commandant Ram Krishna Wadhwa was awarded the Maha Vir Chakra, the nation’s second highest gallantry award.[3]
