Pullingo

Pullingo[lower-alpha 1] (meaning squad of friends)[1] is a Tamil slang that became a phenomenon in 2019.[1] It refers to male teenagers from North Chennai in India who colour their hair, have unique hairstyles, wear skinny jeans, ride Honda Dio scooters[1] and street race. They use specific slang varieties.[2] The term is found in several districts of Tamil Nadu.[3]

It was popularised by the 2019 Gaana song "Gumbalaga Suthuvom" by Gaana Stephen, which got 50 million views in 7 months.[1][4][5]

Some feel that the term has been used in a derogatory manner.[1] The term was mocked in a YouTube video by Eruma Saani which, after public outcry, was taken down.[6]

Notes

  1. Also spelled pullinko, pullaingo or pullingow. Tamil: புல்லைங்கோ
