ProtoPie

ProtoPie is an interactive high-fidelity prototyping software for digital products that does not require coding.[1] Its unique conceptual model to creating interactive prototypes is based on 3 elements: Object + Trigger + Response, giving ProtoPie the label of being most intuitive tool in market. Interactions supported range from the simple to sensors based including tilt, sound, compass, 3D-touch, and proximity.[2]

ProtoPie provides third-party integration with other design programs, such as Sketch, Adobe XD[3] (since v. 3.7[4]), and Figma (since v. 3.10[5]).[6] It operates on both MacOS and Windows, and has a mobile player that operates on Android and iOS.[7]

As of 2020, the most updated version of the app is ProtoPie 5.0,[8] and it had been downloaded for use in over 100 countries.[9][10] It has been used by designers at companies including Google, Nintendo, Alibaba, and Microsoft.[1]

History

ProtoPie was created in 2014[9] by Tony Kim,[11] a former designer at Google, along with two lead engineers at Samsung and Line (Scotty Kim and John Song).[12] The product first launched in January 2017 and since then, ProtoPie has been building out the full feature set and growing the company with Jenna Yim as the helm as chief strategy officer.[12]

Features

  • Interaction Libraries: The libraries allow for consolidation and collection of components that can be reused easily across prototypes.
  • Interaction Recipes: These are guidelines and a foundation for engineers that can be used for actual production that includes all the interaction specs, for example, duration, delay, and easing, needed for development.
  • Sensor Based Interactions: Sensor-based prototypes can be built including those using cameras, native keyboards, voice assistant and others.
  • ProtoPie Connect: This feature is an exclusive extension app that allows management of multiple prototypes across different devices, displays, and hardware.

Recognition

ProtoPie has received the Red Dot Award for communication design in 2017.[13]
